Do you really need an MBA!?

Hello friends,

I am back with another post, trying to search the real motive behind an MBA, to discuss various factors one should consider before opting for an MBA.

MBA in India is an obsession, thanks to Media glam sham, an MBA in India is always over-rated. It is as hyped as Kim Kardashian's life. But i pose a question to you, do you really need an MBA? An MBA is often seen as the gateway to money and loads of money, and a foray into Managerial path, but is it really the case? I have a number of my friends who are leading a far more fulfilling and rewarding careers without an MBA degree than some of the IIM grads.

Life is all about happiness. And happiness in life is to do what you like, what you love, and focus all your energies to what you like to do. So, the funda here is to follow your interest, your passion. Hence, if you love coding or are good at some work your doing, i do not see a point in doing an MBA!! Life is not a rat race, we got to walk at our own pace, try and relish life. I have seen people graduating from BITS, IIT's etc. who are good in technical work, go for MBA's, spend 2 quality years and a lot of MBA fees for no certain reason. Many of them end up with decent salaries, but the whole motive behind an MBA remains defeated.

An MBA should not be seen as a gateway to richness, it is just a holistic experience and some management education. If you are good in technical stuff, it is better to pursue the same line, you will learn and grow, money will follow on its own. As they say, take care of the runs and the money will take care on its own. However, if you want to grow in the business side augmenting you interest in technical work, go for an MBA from a good B-school after 4-5 years of work-ex.

Freshers, those who have less inclination towards technical work and are more inclined towards Financial Management, Marketing/Sales etc. should only go for an MBA at an earlier stage in their careers. So the basic principle is that one should not starve for an MBA without any planning. An MBA should be the result of a need or career progression and not just a lust for money! Moreover reported MBA placements are over-hyped and falsely show the Maximum Earning Potential as the average pay, also most B-schools have un-regulated placement reports, so they cook up their numbers in various ways like adding multiple offers, converting foreign jobs into INR and use them to calculate the salary average etc. etc.
Have a look at the IIM-A's placement report published by CRISIL for a reality check:

Recently, i read in an article that the number of students opting for MBA's has more than tripled in the last decade and the tuition fees for MBA programs has risen far more than the inflation rates. Students are taking more and more of education loans, and with time the student education loan defaults are also increasing. This is steadily building towards an Education bubble, where in student education loan defaults are increasing alarmingly and risk a bubble burst, which can lead to another depression/recession.

Hence, i just request my dear friends to go for an MBA if it is really needed. If you are good in technical work, there are perhaps better chances to grow more in the same field. A huge investment of money and time in an MBA might not really pay off for most of us.

Good Luck.

Cheers,
Ankit

  1. Hey Ankit,
Stumbled upon your blog when I was looking for SP Jain related information, and am really impressed. You REALLY love your Marketing, and I must say, I am counting you as an inspiration. I graduated from Manipal in 2008 and have been working as a techie in a software startup since then. I have developed a love for Marketing, and I have decided to go for an MBA. Your post resonated with me, as once upon a time, the very reason why I did not consider an MBA was because I didn't want to do it for the wrong reasons (as you have mentioned) . After having worked for some time, I discovered the World of Marketing, and I have decided to make a career out of it. I am applying to SP Jain for the April 2012 intake ( GMAT 720 , extra curriculars at work , some social work , 42 months of experience ) . What do you think my chances are ?

On a different note, your blog really speaks out loud about your love for Marketing. Keep up the good work. And do write a post on how you research your articles so well !
